It was quite a journey: from a tiny speck in the middle of the vast Pacific, to the most beautiful city in California, just on the verge of another tech boom. But the more amazing journey was that we each had just about all our possessions in the world on our backs. That would have been unthinkable only four years earlierâ€"and I still had trouble believing my wife and kids would go along with such a crazy idea. In fact, I had my doubts: if it were just me, I’d be OK with owning almost nothing. But here we were, starting life anew in an unknown city, with the kids never having lived in any city before, and we didn’t have a home, beds, couch, or a car (nor were we planning to get a car). What kind of madness had I gotten our eight-person family into? Had I just made a huge mistake? With all of their trust resting on my shoulders, I was pretty worried. Everything turned out OK. We found a home after a couple of weeks shacking up in the living room of my cousin’s house, and we soon grew to love our new city. We found furniture on Craigslist, learned to explore the city by walking and riding mass transit, and found clothes in the great thrift shops. I learned to trust we’d be OK, even starting life afresh with not many possessions to speak of. I learned we can adapt, survive, and cope with the fear of not being OK. It still amazes me how far we’ve come, from living in a home piled high with clutter and toys and furniture, to giving up that life. It’s easy for me to make those kinds of changes by myself, but getting my wife who loved shopping and my kids who loved toys to changeâ€"that’s the miracle. How did we make those changes? I remember sitting the kids down in our house in Guam and talking to them about the idea of simplifying: they looked skeptical, and frankly a bit horrified, that I was talking about getting rid of their favorite toys. But we went into their room, where we couldn’t even see the floor because it was covered in toys, and I pointed out that most of their toys they didn’t play with. Some of them were played with once on Christmas day, only to be stuffed in the back of the closet and forgotten. Others you couldn’t find even if you remembered to look for them, because they were buried in an avalanche of Legos and Transformers and trash. So I proposed an experiment: let’s box up just the toys they didn’t like, and they could keep everything they really wanted and really used. I wasn’t threatening their favorite thingsâ€"just clearing the way so they could play with those favorite things more. Sorting through their junk was fun, and we turned it into a game: how many things could we put in the box that they didn’t need? And wouldn’t it be fun to give some of those things to kids who needed them more? Or give them as gifts to cousins? Decluttering became fun and generous. Eva and I were going through the same process with our stuff, boxing up piles of junk that had accumulated over the years. I told her she didn’t have to get rid of her shoes, or her favorite clothes, and she was pretty cool with it all. Incredibly, she’s one of the most minimalist people I know now, and travels for weeks with a tiny backpack smaller than mine. What a journey. We went through stages of decluttering, with our own stuff and with the kids. Wed remove a few boxes and give them away, and then spend another weekend the following month finding more things they didn’t need. On and on we were shedding layers of dead skin, becoming new people. Christmas was the hardest transition: we used to go all out and buy them a mountain of toys, because it was fun. They adored Christmas Day for the gorging on gifts that it had become. We talked to them multiple times about what a waste that was, about how we were trying to get out of debt, about how our favorite times as a family were when we spent time together doing fun things. They got that, because their favorite memories weren’t of toys, but of going to the beach, or playing board games, or going to a waterpark. So they eventually agreed to forgo toys for experience gifts, and that has become our tradition. I think we all still long for the Christmas consumerist feast sometimes, but we treasure the family trips we do together even more. Layer upon layer, we removed our junk and changed our habits as a family. It didn’t happen overnight, but lasting change never does: It requires an adaptation of your mind to a new normal, one small stage at a time. It requires changing your buying habits, figuring out what your real needs are, and creating new family traditions. We’ve learned that meaningful change is a slow learning process, but then the best journeys always are. We came a long way from mountains of broken toys to a backpack each on our backs, entering a new city. Is College Abroad Right for Me

Story time, Magooshers. Just recently, I had a week-long adventure in Dresden, Germany. During my time there I took a day trip to Gorlitz, a perfectly preserved city on the German/Polish border. On train back to Dresden, I sat next to a very interesting young man. For the purposes of this article, let’s call him Tim. Tim was a nineteen-year-old American college freshman studying at the Technische Universitat Dresden (Dresden University of Technology), also known as TU Dresden. â€Å"Are you studying abroad?† I asked. â€Å"No,† he said. â€Å"I decided to go to college here to get my degree. Just started last month.† Thus began one of the most interesting conversations I’ve had regarding post-secondary education. I learned a lot about what it takes for a young American to go to college abroad. Using Tim’s experience, and a little of my own research, I want to discuss whether or not college abroad is right for you. Money One of the things Tim told me was that studying at TU Dresden was costing him about $10,000 a year. That included housing, which the German government afforded him a small monthly allowance to offset his costs. This came to a surprise to me, as I assumed financial assistance would be awarded only to German students. Not the case, and good news for Americans thinking about studying in Germany. I went on to research how other foreign governments treat students from abroad. When it comes to ‘bang for your buck,’ Germany and Canada seem to be the two best places for American students to save money. Both countries’ public colleges are heavily subsidized by their national governments, and the quality of education is on par with many well-known American colleges. In Germany, expect your yearly expenses to be about what Tim is currently paying. In Canada, expect to pay about twice as much. That may sound like a lot, but that is still a significant savings compared to private colleges in the states. Tim went on to say that though his parents were well off financially, and that he did really well in school, the cost of private college/university in the states (upwards of $60,000 a year) was just too much. Many times in my Magoosh articles, I have stressed the importance of a cost-benefit analysis when it comes to choosing a college. And Europe is a pretty place to live, too! (Photo by the author.) Could Tim have found a cheaper alternative in the United States? Of course he could have. Everything from community colleges to state universities offer significant savings, and many provide educations that will lead to successful job prospects after graduation. Yes, many well-respected foreign colleges cost significantly less than their American counterparts. Yet it wasn’t just money alone that made Tim want to ‘run for the border’ when it came to college. His decision had a lot to do with his interests. What do You Want to Study? Besides money, Tim’s decision to go to college in Germany, and specifically at TU Dresden, came down to his choice of major. Unlike most American college freshmen, Tim knew what he wanted to study back in high school: Transport and Traffic Sciences. The major is a mix of science, economics, and engineering. German schools are the place to be when it comes studying it. I gave him credit for having chosen a major so early in the college game. What Tim’s story taught me (and should teach you) is that foreign colleges offer a variety of majors/opportunities that their American counterparts do not. The reverse is also true. That’s why lots of foreign students go to college in the United States. Most American students easily find their niche when they get to college, and decide on a major. Yet Tim knew from an early age that he wanted something different. If you’re a high school student researching colleges, and the opportunities for majors don’t seem to fit your talents/interests, you may want to give foreign colleges a look. One thing to keep in mind is that when it comes to foreign colleges, many of them ask you to choose a major on day one. This is a very different system than the American model, which allows students to sample different courses for a year (or two) before settling on a major. Language Barriers â€Å"So,† I said to Tim, â€Å"I guess you had to start learning German pretty young.† Tim told me that he had taken German throughout high school, and it was that in his sophomore year that he decided that he wanted to go to college in Germany. After that language acquisition became his main focus. After all, all his classes were completely in German. Unless you’re going to college abroad in an English-speaking country, you have to know the local language. So like Tim, you need to focus on language acquisition as early as possible. Dedicating himself to German meant that Tim had to get the SATs out of the way in the sophomore year. After all, back then he didn’t know what, if any, German college would accept him. If you’re planning to go to college abroad in a country where the primary language isn’t English, Tims strategy should be your strategy. Do You Want to Work Abroad After Graduation? Near the end of our journey, as the rolling hills of Saxony turned into the suburbs of Dresden, I asked Tim whether or not he wanted to live and work in Germany after he graduated. Tim admitted that he hadn’t thought that far ahead†¦which is fine. In his situation, he is golden, due to the fact that many German high technology companies (which need the services of Transport and Traffic Sciences experts) have offices and factories all over the world. Now, I would never tell someone to choose a major just because it is ‘useful,’ but if you’re considering college abroad, you want to leave yourself with the option of staying in that country, coming home, or living in another country entirely. Are there other majors besides engineering and the sciences where this is possible? Sure. If you want to be a university professor, whether abroad or in the U.S., an undergraduate degree from a foreign university would be a good first step on that path. When it comes to post-graduation employment, it’s good to remember that like American colleges, foreign colleges have connections with companies and institutions in their home countries. This means that depending on your major, you may only be able to find work abroad, at least for a little while until you can build up some work experience. The Challenges of Going to College Abroad Going to college abroad can be a scary proposition. Few, if any, of the adults in your life will be able to give you advice or help you with the process of applying. Other issues you will need to solve involve obtaining a passport, visa, and health insurance during your time in college. Living in a foreign country also presents other obstacles, such as adapting to a new culture, feeling like an outsider, and making new friends. (Granted, these three challenges also exist at American colleges.) There may be long stretches of time when you dont see your family, too. Now, none of these challenges are impossible, and in many cases, the rewards can outweigh the stresses that come with going to college abroad. I mention them to let you know what you’re getting yourself into if you choose this path. I’m sure that Tim, despite his intelligence and drive, will have his low moments. Yet all college students have their low moments getting used to their new situation. Tim will do just fine, and so will you if you choose to follow in his footsteps. Final Thoughts on if College Abroad is Right for You If the thought of going to college abroad has crossed your mind, you certainly have a lot of work to do. But when it comes to getting ready for life after high school, every teenager has a lot to do. Even if you ultimately decide to attend college in the United States, researching foreign colleges will no doubt open your eyes to new possibilities. The Wrights had no children and Mrs. Wright was alone in the house all day long. The women perceive John Wright to be a controlling husband who in fact probably wouldnt have children and this may have upset Mrs. Wright. They eventually find vacant bird cage and ponder upon what happened to the bird, realizing Mrs. Wright was lonely they figured she loved the bird and it kept her company. The women make reference to the fact that Mrs. Wright was kind of like a bird herself, and that she changed so much since she married John Wright. They begin looking for stuff to bring her and they find the bird dead and they realize someone had wrung its neck. Matt Ridleys book, The Rational Optimist: How Prosperity Evolves The latest book by Matt Ridley entitled The Rational Optimist: How Prosperity Evolves presents a deep and amazing argument regarding the reason behind the expectation of life getting better and better with the passage of time. According to Ridley (2011), optimism revolves around several aspects of networks, globalization, cooperation, exchange, trade and specialization. Readers belonging to the domain of philosophy consider the book to be highly stimulating. Ridley (2011) has actually synthesized and expanded some of the ideas most readers are already acquainted with. These ideas are reminders of different books and certain connections and patterns exist between them (Easterly, 2010). Due to the freedom of these African Americans and the South’s ever-growing hatred towards this group, African Americans were left to suffer harsh discrimination and horrible conditions. During my 2 months in the language-training center, I found out just how different Mandarin Chinese is from my native language. The time went by quickly, and after obtaining a very tenuous grasp on the basics of Mandarin, I got on the plane and flew to Taiwan. Upon arriving there, I was assigned a companion who had been in Taiwan for just over a year and a half. From my first day in Taiwan, I was expected to dive headfirst into the task of teaching people about the church. I found that although at the Missionary Training Center I had learned to put together basic sentences, there was a whole other level of the language that I still needed to considerthe discourse level. The pursuit of clear and fluent discourse has been a focus of mine ever since. I always hoped that I would eventually pick up the finer points of Mandarin Chinese purely through contact with the people. The church did provide us with some study aids. However, these study aids amounted only to vocabulary lists and a few grammar hints which were either very basic or not altogether accurate. I discovered a trend, which has been accurately pointed out by Bourgerie (1997:107); those who made our study aids seemed to assume that there are classes of items that are beyond the realm of normal pedagogy. It seems they assumed that mastery of these items would be obtained through everyday contact with the people. I found, upon returning home a year ago, that I still hadnt picked up many of these items. While my speaking ability had reached a point that native Chinese people clearly understood my pronunciation and tones, my mastery of those items that had not been clearly taught to me sometimes caused major communication breakdowns. Frustrated, I decided to isolate these parts of speech that were giving me so much trouble, look them up in reference grammars, and figure out once and for all how to use them like a native Chinese person. It was this search that raised the questions that I will attempt to answer in this paper. The part of Chinese I chose to examine for this paper is the perfective aspect (PRV) -le particle. I will analyze and compare how various grammars, textbooks, and studies describe and explain this particle. Because most of the descriptions and explanations of this particle seem to be based mainly on the theories and ideas of the authors of these analyses, it seemed that a survey of native Chinese speakers would provide a good standard by which to judge these theories. Li and Thompsons book, MANDARIN CHINESE A Functional Reference Grammar (1981) is widely used to teach learners of Chinese how to use the PRV -le particle. That is why, for this paper, I chose to put Li and Thompson up against the standard a survey would provide. By looking at data from 27 Chinese Mandarin speakers use of PRV -le in discourse against Li and Thompsons prescription of how the particle should be used, I will attempt to find out how accurate that prescription is when compared to how native speakers actually use the particle. Next, I present the results of the study. Finally, I discuss the implications of the results for learners of Chinese.
